The Mutley Fool
Yes it’s true, my name is Pongo and I am the office dog at Olivine. Before I had my own Blog I engaged in incessant, pointless barking - how life changes! I was the only one around when the marketing team descended on the office to discuss the option of an Interwebby based communication medium (whatever that is?) and hence I had to ‘run with the bone’. If you want to get in contact with me to share your views on a dog’s life in finance then please click here.

Alone...
We are all alone, born alone, die alone, and — in spite of True Romance magazines — we shall all someday look back on our lives and see that, in spite of our company, we were alone the whole way. I do not say lonely — at least, not all the time — but essentially, and finally, alone. This is what makes your self-respect so important, and I don’t see how you can respect yourself if you must look in the hearts and minds of others for your happiness.

Happy new year!
Happy New Year! Well in china at least – this year is the year of the Ox – so let’s hope the bull market returns although the likelihood of this is remote at best. Last year was the year of the rat and it certainly was! Unfortunately, the last Dog year was 2007 and what a great year it was....the next YoD is not until 2018 when the “earth dog*” is the elemental sign. We will probably have to wait until 2018 for the economy to recover to 2007 levels again......but let’s hope not.
I had the shock this morning of making the now biannual payment of personal tax which resulted in a sizable reduction in my cash holdings leaving me only enough for the price of the Financial Times, the train ticket home and a lamb shank for supper and that’s all. Time to tighten the belt for the next month or so until said bank account is suitably replenished – just hope the share portfolio shows signs of recovery!
Still all indexes are either ‘recession red’ or dramatically pointing downwards – with KPMG effectively cutting 1/5th of their staff by offering a 4 day week; Honda, the Japanese vehicle manufacturer, closing its UK Swindon plant for 50 days and retailers falling over like sleeping cattle the ‘green shoots’ are still some time off despite the worrying comments from Baroness Vadera. I have no idea which park she is playing in but it certainly is not in my back yard.
A source close to the cabinet told me at lunch today (a very pleasant 2 courses at El Vinos, Blackfriars) that the government is considering plans for rationing if the wheels really do come of the old wagon. On hearing this I put in an order for 6 months supplies of Nature Diet (my favourite bite..) – Lamb with rice and vegetables, fish with potato and rice and my favourite rabbit & turkey with vegetables and rice.........roll on rationing as I’m all right jack.
• Dog attributes – “Like his animal namesake, he is Loyal. He is the one who people are most likely to turn to when they need help. The dog person will come through every time. That is because he/she is sensitive to others and empathizes with them, particularly if someone has suffered an injustice; he/she reacts quickly with the same feeling as though he/she had been personally offended. Friends know that they can rely upon their Dog friend to keep a promise or remain cool in a crisis. Dog People are somewhat selfish, terribly stubborn, and eccentric. They can find fault with many things and are noted for their sharp tongues. Dogs are also considered to be extremely good looking, smart, graceful, likeable and nice.
Dog types are honest, intelligent and straightforward. They will take on any responsibility that is given to them and you can be sure that they will do their job well.
People born in this year tend to be difficult, upset and shocked more often than the other signs.
Dog types do not tolerate weakness. They will work to push the weakness or the whole person with weakness out of their lives (the pack) if the behavior continues.
Dogs ideal jobs: politician, scientist, actor/actress, teacher, writer, movie director, pub landlord/landlady.”

Obama's dog at the white house
US president-elect Barack Obama is being urged to make a rehomed dog the first appointment of his administration.
Animal charity PDSA has pressed Mr Obama to break from the White House tradition of making pedigree canines the presidential pet of choice.
The president-elect has promised his daughters, Sasha and Malia, a puppy when they move into the White House.
Who will following in the paw steps of the great Spot Fletcher Bush and Barney Bush!

Pongo's index
Having watched the rapid decline in asset values, as an intrepid city dog, I have decided to enter the financial markets - by investing my hard earned bones into a total of 12 initial stocks for £100,000 each I am hoping to turn a swift profit.
Selected at random by placing my paw on a number of cards left out on the floor I will decide to buy/ sell/ hold or halve my holdings by the same process of paw placement.
Let's see how soon i can retire to my kennel by the sea, lapping cocktails and eating caviar biscuits!

Ruff times ahead
For me things are okay since being put on the ‘credit crunch diet’ by the office – this is a special mix - Gluten and GMO free – and I must say I have shed a few pounds, dollars, yen ...
However, I am putting it all back on with my mantra for surviving le Crunch – “eat more food, buy less shoes and bury your bones in very safe places”.
